What are fancy colored diamonds?

by Venessa Count.

When we think of diamonds we typically think of the sparkling white diamond which is nearly colorless. But not all of them are naturally clear, some have natural color. These colored versions are called fancy color diamonds. They come in a range of colors from blue and pink to brown and yellow.

How They Are Formed

While the traditional white or clear diamond is graded by its lack of color, the fancy color versions are valued based on the intensity of their color. These fancy colored stones are a relatively small portion of the market, but they are becoming increasingly popular so their share of the market has been growing a bit.

Specific conditions need to exist for these gems to be formed with color. The color is created when certain natural elements and things like radiation are in the area while these diamonds are being formed. Distortions to the diamond crystal also contribute to the color. Because these conditions aren’t very common these natural colored diamonds are much more rare than the colorless version.

Some More Rare Than Others

Certain colors are more rare than others because the exact conditions necessary to create that specific color are even more rare, so not many of them are found. These of course are extremely expensive. Colors that fall into this category include red, orange and purple.

Colors that are a little more common include yellows and browns. While these were once thought to be low color stones they have gained popularity and are now appreciated for their beauty, even by celebrities on the red carpet. It doesn’t hurt that they have appealing names like champagne or chocolate diamonds either.

How They Are Priced

Fancy color diamonds can range from a pastel to an intense color. The intensity of their color, or lack of intensity, defines their value. The lighter ones are less expensive then the intensely colored stones. As you can guess the lighter colored stones are more common so not quite as expensive.

Because these colored diamonds have become more popular you will find more cultured or man made versions. Some are also irradiated to sharpen or intensify the color of a stone that may be seen as a little dull in its natural state. The cultured or irradiated stones are generally more affordable than the completely natural versions.

If you want a natural colored diamond go to a reputable jeweler and have a discussion about exactly what you want. They will be able to give you a certificate of authenticity for any certified diamond you buy.
